A few months back a few friends and I took off to this enchanting island along the western coast of Karnataka. Before our trip we researched on things to do, places of interest near-by and even made a rough itinerary. Ironically the only time we stepped off the island ( after reaching it, of course!) was when it time to leave. Some places just cast a spell on you. Soans island did just that to us. We had a cottage on stilts above the water. We had our sunset in the evening and sunrise in the morning. A perfect time wrap not too far from home.
Close to Aurangabad in the state of Maharashtra,India lies the Lonar lake; a saline lake formed by the impact of a meteor crashing in to the surface of the earth many many many years ago. A steep walk takes you down to the base of the crater lake and a 5 km walk takes you around the lake.
There is a walking path along the lake surrounded by trees and infested with monkeys. A word of caution: The monkeys are ferocious and attack even with slight provocation.
There is abundant flora and fauna around the lake.
Information: There is MTDC guest house at the top with a couple of rooms. This is the only decent accommodation and they serve a reasonable meal on request.
