The 60th Nehru Trophy Snake boat race

When the late prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru visited God’s own country Kerala, we put up quite a show for him. He was so impressed with the Snake boat race that he institutionalized the race into the annual Nehru Snake boat race.

Different boats clubs from all over Kerala compete along the backwaters of Allepey in long traditional boats called Chundam vallam. Winning is a matter of pride, rather was a matter of pride. This year a prize money of 10 lakh ( 1 million ) INR  has been  promised.

A more descriptive post is coming up with details of the race. Till then I will leave you with a few teasers.

An update: The Kerala tourism board has launched a new campaign : The Great backwaters. It aims to promote the vast scenic and cultural wealth that is the backwaters of Kerala.

“44 rivers, a vast network of lakes, 1500 kms of labyrinthine canals, snake boat races, over 300 species of birds, floating markets… showcasing the magnificence of  Kerala backwaters, the campaign has reached out to travelers and nature lovers from across the world”
